Beyonce won six awards at the 52nd Annual Grammy Award show on Sunday, breaking the previous record (held by her and five other artists) for the most wins by a female artist. Taylor Swift took the coveted Album of the Year, becoming the youngest artist to ever win the award. The Kings of Leon won record of the year, beating out both Swift and Beyonce. Stephen Colbert took best comedy album. Besides the awards, there were a number of notable performances and a moving speech by Michael Jackson's two oldest children (Paris and Prince) as they accepted his lifetime achievement award.

A Historical Newspaper Perspective

Beyonce first made an impression at the Grammy Awards in 2004, when she won five Grammys. "Beyonce captured a record-tying five Grammys on Sunday for her solo debut album 'Dangerously in Love,' while Justin Timberlake had two and apologized for his role in Janet Jackson's Super Bowl flash," reported the Gazette on February 9, 2004. "Her five trophies tied a record set by Alicia Keys, Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill for the most Grammys won by a female artist." Amy Winehouse joined that list in 2008, while Alison Krauss (who holds the record for the most Grammys by a female artist in a lifetime) took five in 2009.
