"Share Your History" Contest

Overview

  • The Share Your History contest is open to all members of http://www.ournewspaperarchive.com community website. Sign up is free and can be found at http://www.ournewspaperarchive.com/user/login.
  • The contest will begin on February 9, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. CST and run until February 28, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. CST. No points will be awarded after that time.
  • The contest will be decided by a point total. Points will be awarded by a completely automated system according to the criteria below.
  • The contestant with the most points at the end of the contest will be declared the winner.

 

Point Criteria

Points will be awarded to members according to the following:

  • 5 POINTS - Member posting a Discovery to http://www.ournewspaperarchive.com community website.
    • Post must be published and fully visible to all members. Final approval of Discovery points is entirely up to NewspaperARCHIVE.com.
  • 2 POINTS - Member commenting on a Discovery created by a different member.
    • Comment must be valid and not contain any spam. Final approval of comment points is entirely up to NewspaperARCHIVE.com.
  • 1 POINT - Each pageview, by any member or visitor, of a Discovery, awarded to that Discovery's creator.
    • Pageviews are limited by IP address to prevent "spam viewing." Final approval of pageview points is entirely up to NewspaperARCHIVE.com.

 

Prize

The prize will be a one-month free membership to the NewspaperARCHIVE premium service (http://www.newspaperarchive.com). Winners who currently subscribe will have their membership extended by one month. New members will be given a month at no charge. No credit card information or payment is required.

 

OFFICIAL ONLINE CONTEST RULES

NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND IS NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN THIS CONTEST. A PURCHASE WILL NOT IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. ONLY RESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES, 13 AND OLDER, WHO MEET THE OTHER ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA BELOW, ARE ELIGIBLE.

1. Sponsor: This contest (the "Contest") is sponsored by NewspaperARCHIVE.com, a division of Heritage Archives, Inc. ("Sponsor"), an online newspaper archive that has its principal place of business at 4049 21st Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.

2. Contest Period of Validity: The Contest will run from 09:00:01 a.m. CST on February 9, 2010 and run until 03:59:59 p.m. CST on February 28, 2010.

3. Eligibility:

(a) Subject to part (b), the Contest is open only to individuals who are (i) legal residents of one of the 50 United States or District of Colombia, (ii) 13 years of age or older on the date of entry, as shown on a valid driver's license or other means of identification issued by a federal or state government agency or by a school or other educational institution, and containing the entrant's address and picture, and (iii) have internet access and a valid email address.

(b) The following individuals are not eligible to participate in the Contest: (i) past and present employees and previously published paid authors of Sponsor, (ii) past and present employees at companies who are clients, or who have business partnerships or relationships, with Sponsor, and (iii) members of the immediate family and/or individuals living in the same household as an individual described in 3(b)(i) or (ii).

(c) Entrants must provide a valid email address to Sponsor in their profile (located via the "Profile and Tools" link in the left navigation).

4. Consumer Disclosure: Description of Prize: The Contest Winner shall receive thirty-one (31) days of membership to the Sponsor's subscription newspaper archive website, http://www.newspaperarchive.com (NewspaperARCHIVE.com). The prize will be awarded at no cost to the Contest Winner, and the Contest Winner will not be asked or required to provide payment information or agree to any future billing. If the Contest Winner alreadypurchases a subscription to NewspaperARCHIVE.com, the subscription renewal date will be extended by thirty-one (31) days.

5. How to Enter: To enter the Contest, interested parties must become members of OurNewspaperARCHIVE (via the "create account" page located at http://www.ournewspaperarchive.com/user/login or via the "Facebook Connect" button provided on all pages). If a member uses the "create account" page, the user must then verify the membership by responding to the auto-generated email to ensure eligibility. 

6. Earning Points: Contestants will earn points as follows: (i) Five (5) points will be awarded for each "discovery" that a user posts to OurNewspaperARCHIVE. Posting a discovery requires that a user create a piece of content via the "Share Discovery" link in the OurNewspaperARCHIVE left navigation or through the "Share" button on NewspaperARCHIVE search results page or newspaper pdf viewer. The text in the "Body" portion of the "Discovery" piece must be relevant, must be in the English language, and must not contain links to irrelevant or spam websites; the Sponsor may disqualify points from Contestants leaving posts at its sole discretion. (ii) Two (2) points will be awarded for each comment that a contestant leaves on any Discovery that was not created by that contestant. The text of the comment must be relevant to the Discovery commented on, must be in the English language, and must not contain links to irrelevant or spam websites; the Sponsor may disqualify points from Contestants leaving comments at its sole discretion. (iii) One (1) point will be awarded to a Contestant for each time another visitor reads a discovery of the Contestant. The Contestant may use any legitimate manner of urging visitors to read the Contestant's Discoveries, including, but not limited to, posting a portion of the post with a link onto the Contestant's facebook page, twitter feed, blog, etc. Illigitimate means include decietfulspam of links to the Discovery, use of bots or other programmatic means of simulating actual visits, etc.

7. Selection of the Winner: After the contest ends, the Sponsor will review point tallies. The member with the highest number of points will be judged winner. If (i) a Notification email is returned or is deemed by Sponsor (in its sole discretion) to be undeliverable, or (ii) the selected entrant is determined by Sponsor (in its sole discretion) to be ineligible, or (iii) the potential winner does not reply to the Notification with all contact information requested in the Notification within ten (10) days from the date the Notification was sent, the potential winner will be disqualified and an alternate entrant will be identified as a potential winner and so notified in the same manner as before.

8. Limitations of Liability/Reserved Rights: None of the Sponsor Entities, or any of their parent, subsidiary or affiliate companies, nor any of their promotional agencies, shall have any obligation or responsibility with respect to: (i) notifications, communications or materials sent from an entrant to Sponsor or from Sponsor to an entrant, that are lost, late, misdirected, garbled, inaccurate, incomplete, illegible, unintelligible, damaged or otherwise not received by the intended recipient, in whole or in part, due to computer, post office or technical error of any kind, (ii) telephone, electronic, hardware, software, network, Internet or computer malfunctions, failures or difficulties, (iii) power-related or weather-related events of any kind, and/or to any event not under Sponsor's direct control, (iv) entries or other communications from entrants that contain inaccurate information or do not comply with these rules, (v) errors, omissions, interruptions, deletions, defects, delays in operation or transmissions, theft, destruction, unauthorized access or alterations by entrant or third parties, (vi) any damages or losses of any kind caused by any prize or resulting from acceptance, possession or use of any prize. Sponsors, in their sole discretion, reserve the right to disqualify any person tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest Web Site or otherwise violating these rules. Sponsor further reserves the right to cancel, terminate or modify this Contest if this Contest cannot be completed as planned because of infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention or technical failures of any sort.

9. General Conditions: (a) The Contest is subject to these Official Rules and is governed by the laws of the State of Iowa without reference to it rules concerning conflicts or law. By entering, entrants agree: (i) to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor (which shall be final and binding in all respects), (ii) to be subject to Sponsor's Privacy Policy, available for review at NewspaperARCHIVE.com, Inc.'s community website: http://www.ournewspaperarchive.com/index.php?q=privacy-policy; (iii) to release and hold harmless Sponsor Entities and each of their parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies, and each of their employees and agents, from and of any and all liability for any injuries, losses or damages of any kind arising from their participation in the Contest and/or the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize; and (iv) to be contacted by Sponsor Entities and/or their affiliated companies, subject to these Official Rules. Any claims relating to this Contest must be resolved in the state or federal courts of Iowa. (b) In order to validly enter and in order to claim the Prize, entrants may be required to provide Sponsor with certain personally identifiable information ("PII") such as name, residential address, residential telephone number, e-mail address, daytime telephone number and/or other contact information. Such information may be used for the purposes set forth in the Sponsor's Privacy Policy, in accordance with the terms set forth in that Privacy Policy. Entrants wishing that the Sponsor not contact them via postal mail, electronic mail and/or by via telephone (except in connection with the Contest and/or as otherwise set forth in the Privacy Policy) may elect to opt-out of such disclosures (i.e., they may direct Sponsor not to make those disclosures -- other than those as to which "opting out" is not permitted) by contacting us by e-mail at scarr@newspaperarchive.com. (c) If for any reason the Contest cannot run as planned, including computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, postal strike or any other causes which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the Contest, Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to (i) disqualify any individual who is responsible or who tampers with the entry process, and/or (ii) to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest, and (if the Contest is not cancelled) to select the winner from among all eligible entries received prior to the termination or modification. (d) Except where prohibited by law, acceptance of a prize shall constitute and signify the Contest winner's consent that the Sponsor may use the winner's name, likeness, image, voice, photographs and written statements made by the Contest winner about the Contest, the prizes and about Sponsor for promotional purposes in all forms of media, in perpetuity, without payment or consideration. (e) Sponsor may prohibit any individual from participating in the Contest or winning a prize if, in Sponsor's sole discretion, Sponsor determines that the individual is (i) attempting to undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest by cheating, deception, or other unfair playing practices, or (ii) intending to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other participants or Sponsor’s agents.
