When the readers of the London General Evening Post opened their newspapers on August 15th, 1776, they discovered the colonies had officially broken away from England by writing something called THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. That declaration didn't seem to be taken very seriously in England. It only appeared on page two.
