census

Historic newspapers can provide clues to help locate “lost” ancestors. The comings and goings of people in communities was often documented in the pages of the local or home town newspaper. The census provides the decennial counting of people, but what if your ancestor moved about during those intervening years. City directories can be helpful. Many were produced annually, but not every locale had a city directory, and not all city directories have survived.
