Berlin Wall

Friday November 10th, 1989: The East German government threw open it's borders Thursday and announced that its citizens now may travel freely to West Germany. Thousands of jubilant East Germans quickly tested the new policy by flocking to the crossing points in divided Berlin. At Checkpoint Charlie, a major crossing point, a huge crowd gathered to cheer and applaud as East Germans walked through the gates between the wall in twos, threes and fives. Some scrambled atop the Berlin Wall despite streams from the water cannons of border guards.

November 9th was the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. While I've covered the fall of the wall itself in The Daily Perspective at NewspaperARCHIVE.com (read here), the creation of the wall is an interesting story in itself.
